It took me 10 years to get my Bachelors degree and another 2.5 years for my Masters. I was asked many times how did you do it, how could you go to school so long? Well, I established a milestone where I rewarded myself each time I completed a semester. I bought a fur coat, diamond rings, and other trinkets to commemorate those moments.
Although it has been many years since I received my degree, I still set milestones for my goals. My big goal now is losing weight. I wish it would come off as quickly as it seemed to come on. I also wish when the pounds came they would not have multiplied so quickly.
I started with only 5 to 10 pounds to lose, but since I didn’t establish a maintenance goal, with milestones to celebrate, I found myself with a 50lb problem.
(Lesson learned- Problems never just go away… You must deal with them.)
A friend of mine, Maggie S., told me about the Nike Fuelband. It was really helping her stay accountable. So off to the Apple store I went. I was secretly hoping the Fuelband on my wrist would do all the work and my weight would disappear overnight. Well, that did not happen, so I went back to what is successful for me. I set a goal, established a milestone and prepared to celebrate.

Whether it’s weight, going to school, or a project at work; break it down into manageable parts. When you reach the first part (milestone), ask yourself critical questions: Am I on track, Do I need help, Should I continue. By asking these questions before you get to your due date, you can make necessary adjustments and ensure your success.
